ART OF THE STREET -
SHOUTING AT THE WORLD
This was a public open event running for a week as an immersive experience based around exploring street art and local artists in Birmingham, looking at harsh topics such as homelessness, crime and the coronavirus pandemic.
Shouting At The World - Creative, Lighting, Programmer and Prop Builder.
Creator of the event - Dean Bowyer.
On this project, I fulfilled a variety of responsibilities alongside Joanne E L Marshall as a creative in a multitude of disciplines including lighting, programming, set construction, prop building, practical prop design and construction. In partnership with Production LX, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and The Blue Orange Theatre.
One of my primary functions was to design and construct a variety of interactive and/or active set and prop items.
These included a fully functional custom-built telephone exchange, allowing for direct communication to members of the public throughout the immersive experience. See images of this below.
Another active prop was a custom-designed and built Giger counter which ticked and had an actively moving needle as well as a creepy CCTV camera I modified to broadcast on an analogue television frequency and wirelessly send the feed to old CRT TVs in particular areas of the experience. Again in keeping with the 'street' and 'junkyard' feel to parts of the experience, using this old outdated technology created a reliably 'crummy' and realistically poor video quality offering a fun addition for visitors to discover.
Alongside this, there were plenty of other responsibilities I fulfilled, including lighting/sound programming, rigging, lighting design and the construction of many custom LED sets and props (for example a police car bumper), all working alongside Joanne E L Marshall.
This was an immersive experience with a harsh sound-scape and lighting design looking at very dark subject matters showing off art from the likes of LiskBot, Mose and Banksy.
