CITY NIGHTS MOSAIC CHRISTMAS BALL
Lighting Designer & Operator
The Event
The 'City Nights Mosaic Christmas Ball' was a Christmas celebration event held at the wonderful Mosaic Church Coventry, with various entertainments, including a game show, quiz, music and a party at the end of the evening.
The Design
working on the design for this event needed to be very free-flowing and multiple contingencies taken into account as elements of the show were still in flux up until 'house open'. For this reason, the showfile was built in a way for maximum flexibility. As you can see by the picture, there was a bit of a set made up of abstract trees. Uplit from the centre. With the addition of vintage-style LED fixtures, LED battens and a variety of other instruments to illuminate the room to give a warm feel, the outcome truly served its purpose.
The Project
As you can see below, despite this being in principle rather simple, multiple iterations of the rig plans were made, but for more than just the odd creative design choice change. Due to the bizarre nature of the building and its construction, rigging points and other issues were a deep consideration and creative solutions had to be generated by both myself and venue team members. One prime example is the rigging points for the two upstage gallery moving lights.
Testimonial from SoStudio UK
Exemplary, creative and detail-focused are some words that come to mind when trying to describe Charlie's work. It is always such a pleasure to enlist the knowledge and support of Charlie. His artistic eye for transforming space with light is truly astounding and that's before you consider how easy it is to work with Charlie, he throws everything he has into every project he takes on and never fails to go above and beyond.
More specifically, I was asked to help host a Christmas Ball in an old church building. Charlie's process starts with meticulously planned rig plans developed after the site visit. This step is crucial in allowing Charlie to execute creative lighting states to the standard he does. He is extremely sensitive to what's happening in the room which allows for a lighting design that supports what's happening and amplifies the mood, without being distracting or pulling focus away. From the feedback from the Ball, it's safe to say that the lighting design is what set this event apart from others we have hosted in the past.
In conclusion, it is rare to find someone who is technical ,organised and well planned but also excels in creatively translating moods and feelings into lighting. Charlie is a great example of all of these traits whilst proving himself highly adaptable and very knowledgeable time and time again.
